Pasco’s Alliance Against Substance Abuse (ASAP) met with City Council last week to declare April in New Port Richey as Alcohol Awareness Month, part of a larger nationwide campaign to raise awareness about the prevention of alcohol abuse and to alleviate the stigma associated with abuse of the drug. ASAP’s position is that alcoholism is a medical condition in need of treatment. ASAP’s website cites sources which say that alcohol addiction is the most common form of addiction in America.

Alcohol addiction is the most common addiction in America.
As part of ASAP’s prevention, they are promoting their “Talk It Up, Lock It Up” campaign which is a pledge for adults to:
- Not provide alcohol to youth under 21 in my home or on my property.
- Monitor alcohol in my home.
- Not purchase large quantities of alcohol that are not secured.
- Lock up any alcohol in my home.

ASAP’s website also has an excellent video which states that drinking alcohol is the leading cause of preventable injury and death for children under the age of 21. In Pasco County, a majority of students who drink access alcohol from their own home or from the homes of their families.

Pasco’s ASAP works in partnership with the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office and government agencies to reduce the impact of substance abuse in the area.
