Plathe Road Paving Complete, Speeding Problems Begin

New Port Richey announced that the paving of Plathe Road was completed at the end of last week. Asphalt was laid to smooth a new entrance to the southern side of the City over a formerly dirt road that had developed deep grooves and potholes and generated complaints for years.

Pasco County had previously been responsible for maintaining the road, but under a recent interlocal agreement between the City and County, New Port Richey took over maintenance duties. The City’s aim is to make people more aware of a hidden gem, the City’s James E. Grey Preserve along the Pithlachascotee River. With the paving, the park has a new address: 6938 Plathe Road.

No sidewalk has yet been installed along the roadway.

City officials also said that soon after the road was completed, residents began complaining about speeding on the road. Officials said that they would be conducting a seven day speed study starting October 27th.

  1. When the best top speed on the road before was probably 5mph, ANYTHING will look like speeding. The road is posted for 20mph and that was more than fast enough the other day when I drove it.

I’ll reserve judgement on whether we have “speeding problems” or not until after the speed study is completed.

The new pavement makes all the surrounding roads look bad by comparison.

    1. You were saying, Mr. Mayor? I checked with residents prior to writing my article.

      From Debbie Manns’ report:

“As a result of the study, staff is planning to recommend to you the installation of two speed bumps to address the speeding issue.”

What concerns me is that many residents have been complaining about speeding in other areas, and Council and City Staff have not moved to address those concerns, but this comes up and you’re on it like white on rice.

Also, where’s the sidewalk you promised me in 2014 you were working on for Congress St north of Main?
