The Florida Department of Health in Pasco County has confirmed a human case of West Nile in Pasco County. One confirmed case has also been reported in Polk County.
The West Nile virus is spread through bites from infected mosquitoes. Residents are urged to take precautions, including:
- Emptying standing water containers to prevent mosquitoes from breeding – Garbage cans, tops, gutters, and pool covers
- Covering skin with clothing and bug spray repellant
- Using mosquito netting on bedding for children
