Few, if any books, have captured the spirit and colorful history of Florida as has Patrick Smith’s beloved novel. It has been said many times that people should be issued a copy of A Land Remembered when they cross the Florida state line.
Here is your opportunity to get to know the author and his work better as Smith’s son, Rick, takes the stage to delight audiences with a multimedia show about his father and the extraordinary life experiences that enabled him to write with such authority of Florida pioneers, the Seminoles, migrant workers, “river rats” of Mississippi, the social injustices of the South, the Merchant Marine in World War II and the challenges of the present.
You can see A Land Remembered and Smith’s other books come to life through a truly unique multimedia show his son Rick (Patrick Jr.) produced to explore his father’s colorful life as a writer and how he came to write his books. Rick will present his show on Monday, February 24th at 7pm at the NPR Council Chambers in City Hall at 5919 Main Street. “I describe this as a show, not a talk or a lecture,” Rick says. “The presentation consists of over 50 videos, photos, artwork, music and sound effects. I narrate it live throughout. I make it visually stimulating and throw in a joke or two for good measure. My first goal was to make it entertaining. One man in the audience said he had spent his life in media production and that this was the finest example of visual storytelling he had ever seen. That meant a lot to me.”
Stephanie Haimes, Director of the W. H. Bland Public Library in Mount Dora, brought Rick back a second time, stating, “Because of the interest shown at your presentation here, I want to have it at our Community Building which holds approximately 600 people. I have had a lot of presenters/actors, etc and I have never seen such attentiveness on the part of the audience to your presentation. People stood the whole time and did not complain!”
Julie Henry Matus, Curator of Education at the Tampa Bay History Center said, “We were honored to have you here at the History Center. Your presentation drew a record crowd, and we heard nothing but positive feedback from those who attended. It was a great program!”
Rick says his performance is well suited to all age groups. “Just make sure you get there early to get a seat!”
