City Manager Debbie Manns believes that Pasco County is willing to transfer ownership of Plathe Road west of Rowan Road to the City, according to her weekly memo to City Council.
The discussions with Pasco County continue in relationship to the City’s interest in acquiring Plathe Road for the purpose of roadway improvements. At this point in the discussions the county has indicated their willingness to transfer ownership of the road to the city. Additionally, they have agreed to acquire some right-of-way which is necessary to construct the improvements and located within the project boundaries. Lastly, and principally to the credit of Mr. Rivera the county has also committed to handle the costs associated with the preparation of project plans and specifications related to the improvement project. This level of intergovernmental cooperation on a project is an outstanding demonstration of effective governance and I plan to commend both Pasco County and Robert Rivera for their resourcefulness.
Ms. Manns goes on to state that the decision and process will likely take place in December of this year. Plathe Road has long been unpaved and is the only current access to Grey Preserve, a New Port Richey park. The road is filled with deep potholes and was previously gated by residents, despite being a public road. It’s poor condition has led to a lack of access to New Port Richey’s largest park.
City council has expressed previous interest in paving Plathe Road to provide better access, and has also discussed purchasing a property at the southern termination of Congress Street to add pedestrian and bike access to the park.
