New Port Richey to Allow Dogs in Restaurants

Dogs could be ordering off the menu at New Port Richey restaurants even more easily this week. New Port Richey City Council voted Tuesday night 3-2 to approve an ordinance allowing restaurants to seat customers and their canine companions

The ordinance requires restaurant owners to pay a one-time $50 fee in order to allow dogs in outdoor areas at their restaurants. Restaurant employees must also wash their hands after touching dogs, and the ordinance also provides requirements for the handling of food and requirements for cleanup of dog waste. All outdoor tables are also required to have hand sanitizer on hand.

Restaurants allowing furry friends must also post signage stating that dogs are allowed and must display their city permit.

The ordinance was suggested after a state health inspector warned a restaurant owner about dogs on the property, and city staff learned that the City did not have an ordinance which would allow for dogs in restaurants to comply with state laws.

Council members Judy DeBella Thomas and Deputy Mayor Bill Phillips both voted against the measure, though neither provided much information about why beyond Councilman Phillips suggesting that the $50 fee would not cover the cost of enforcement.
