Two photos of New Port Richey Fire Department firefighters giving oxygen to five dogs after an apartment fire in New Port Richey went viral last week on the department’s Facebook page. News stations as far as Chicago picked up the story. Firefighters Rustin Hammes and Alex Hardman gave aid to the dogs. Three of the dogs later succumbed to their injuries, but two survived.
At first the Department posted on their page that all five dogs were expected to pull through:
On Friday, we responded to an apt fire. We arrived to find no one home and five dogs in desperate need of help. After clearing the apt and carrying all the dogs to a safe area, the guys quickly worked to save these little guys. Through their determination and teamwork, they were able to recover all five dogs! The only update we have is that when we cleared the scene, all the pups were doing well and returned to their owner If we hear anything further, we’ll let you know.
Later, the Department updated fans that three of the dogs had died:
We received an update yesterday afternoon from the dog owner of the pups from the apt fire. Unfortunately even after we successfully resuscitated all five of these dogs, the tiny puppy and both parents did not make it. The vet is hopeful that the remaining two larger dogs will recover. We send them our best wishes and hopes for a full recovery. Once again, thank you for sharing all of your well wishes and thanks.
