New Port Richey man finds hand grenade on St. Pete Beach

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office says a New Port Richey man, Clifford Vogel, 60, found an inactive hand grenade about 20 feet offshore from St. Pete Beach with a metal detector. The find was made behind the Sirata beach resort. The Sheriff’s bomb squad unit was called and the area behind the Sirata was cordoned off.

The bomb squad determined that the device was inert and had been in the water for a long period of time. The Sheriff’s Office took possession of it and will destroy it, according to deputies.
