New Port Richey Police issued a statement this morning regarding a call received at 11:52 PM last night at the Royal Palm Inn located at 6523 US Highway 19. The caller referenced a stabbing.
Officers located the victim on the ground near the front office of the hotel. The victim did have a stab wound in his chest right above his heart. Officers applied pressure to the victim’s wound until Fire Rescue responded. Officers made contact with the defendant and a witness outside of their room.
Police say witnesses and the victim identified Paula Brandt as the assailant. The victim told police that Brandt is his “live-in girlfriend” and that she stabbed him once. Police said she had blood on her hands, arms, face, and clothing. Police searched the hotel room and found a bloody knife and Brandt refused to talk with police.
While Officer Pascalli was interviewing a witness, Brandt, who was handcuffed, spit in the officer’s face.
The victim’s statement was confirmed by a witness who was present in the hotel room when the stabbing occurred. The victim was transported to Bayonet Point Hospital as a trauma alert and was immediately sedated. The victim suffered a collapsed lung and is listed in serious but stable condition.
Police said that Brandt has been arrested and charged with Attempted Murder and Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer.
Brandt has three charges from January 2017, December 2016, and May 2016 including two counts of resisting an officer without violence, both of which she is listed as being released on bond pending trial. The third charge stems from an arrest for driving without a valid driver’s license, a misdemeanor.
