Florida Loquat Festival to Hold October Poetry Event

New Port Richey, FL (October 15, 2015) – Organizers for the annual festival are inviting the public to attend the unveiling of Leaves of Loquat, a community-created poetry chapbook celebrating the loquat, Florida’s urban fruit, on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 12 noon to 2 p.m. at the New Port Richey Library in beautiful downtown New Port Richey. Copies of the poetry books will be available for a donation of $5.

The annual Florida Loquat Festival took place in April at the Market Off Main in New Port Richey. It was hosted by Ecology Florida, Friendship Farms & Fare, and the Market Off Main. The event also featured a program of creative literary works with an open mic format for readings of poetry and short prose taking the loquat as subject or central image. April is also National Poetry Month.  More than 15 people read their poetry and verse.
Poets represented in the collection will share their work at this public reading sponsored by Ecology Florida. “All are invited to lend their ears and support at this free reading by coming out to listen and get a taste of what’s in store at next year’s Florida Loquat Festival. If you care about the environment, personal empowerment by growing your own food, or just love poetry by the people, join us on October 24,” said Wendy Buffington, coordinator of the poetry portion of the annual Florida Loquat Festival called “O! Loquat!”

The festival itself is a learning and sharing event that expands a person’s knowledge and appreciation of the loquat tree and its fruit. There were presentations in April on the cultivation of loquat trees, how to eat its fruit, how to can it, and recipes using loquats were provided to attendees. It also featured tasting samples, trees for sale and a talk on the cultural context of this often overlooked Florida fruit-bearing tree.
