UPDATE: A Sears representative has countered the claim that the mall location of Sears is closing, instead saying that the KMart on US19 south of Main Street in New Port Richey will close.
Official: “There may be confusion as the Kmart store in New Port Richey will close to the public in early December. Until then, the store will remain open for customers. The store will begin its liquidation sale on September 28. Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model. These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail – at the store, online and in the home. The store has 58 employees. Those associates that are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores. Most of the associates are part time/hourly.”
The confusion apparently arises from the 2005 merger of KMart and Sears, meaning that KMart stores are branded as “Sears Holding Corp.” The source for the original story was a Sears Holding Corp. employee.
