CORRECTION: KMart to Close, Not Sears

UPDATE: A Sears representative has countered the claim that the mall location of Sears is closing, instead saying that the KMart on US19 south of Main Street in New Port Richey will close.

Official: “There may be confusion as the Kmart store in New Port Richey will close to the public in early December. Until then, the store will remain open for customers. The store will begin its liquidation sale on September 28. Store closures are part of a series of actions we’re taking to reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model. These actions will better enable us to focus our investments on serving our customers and members through integrated retail – at the store, online and in the home. The store has 58 employees. Those associates that are eligible will receive severance and have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Sears or Kmart stores. Most of the associates are part time/hourly.”

The confusion apparently arises from the 2005 merger of KMart and Sears, meaning that KMart stores are branded as “Sears Holding Corp.” The source for the original story was a Sears Holding Corp. employee.

  1. WOO-HOO!! Wondered when they’d finally take that old horse out and shoot it!
Been going downhill for many years. Store is dirty, understocked and understaffed! Been understaffed for a LONG time. Store is like a ghost town when you walk in. I awear, you can almost hear the crickets chirping!
Kmart made a BIG MISTAKE years ago whe they didn’t take Walmart seriously.
Now look at who’s going out! Thought they were the big dog and no one could take them, well to quote a favorite movie of mine,” Who’s the $!#[email protected] now!?” LOL!!

    • Well Frank, I think you seem to forget that Walmart is evil. Kmart wasn’t any better, but talking trash about them like you are is like insulting a small turd because it doesn’t stink as much as a larger turd. In this case, Kmart is a turd that was dwarfed by the bigger pile of crap that is Walmart. Sure, Walmart drives more business than any other retailer in the world, but they are also drains on every single local economy that they open a store within. They put manufacturers out of business, small businesses out of business, and they treat their employees like cattle. The benefit? At Walmart you save maybe a whopping $10-$30 per month on groceries and you can by some overpriced china-made crap. They aren’t that much cheaper than anywhere else, so the short term cost isn’t huge, but the long term cost on the local economy is devastating.
